2025 Membership Renewal

2025 Membership Renewal. Whether you are a full member, a junior or someone who plays occasionally, this is the club for you. Our aim is to encourage people of all ages and levels of experience to have the opportunity to enjoy their tennis.

Your committee has a new look for 2025! After 9yrs Karin Vale is standing down as treasurer and Chris Maggs resigned as chair after 8yrs. I want to express my gratitude to both Chris and Karin for their outstanding service to the club. Fortunately, Chris remains on the committee as treasurer with me becoming Chair. We welcome Bob Wright and Hilary Finnis who have joined the committee. Bob will lead the maintenance team while Hilary already has ideas in development for 2025.

One major challenge for 2025 is how we attract more members, adults and juniors alike. Les Swaby, our Head Coach is keen to partner with our local schools. We don’t only attract children from these initiatives, but it is proven parents either want to try tennis or return to the sport. My target is having club nights and Sunday afternoon socials returning to be the robust sessions we are used to.

Below is our membership renewal form for 2025. The committee have agreed not to raise fees this year, but you may be aware we have had to change the lock on the Clubhouse Door recently and that also means new keys/an additional costs for getting them cut. We have therefore added an extra £4 per key to the renewal amount as a one-off for this year. Many of you will already have received a new key but if you have not then please contact myself, Karin or Bob Wright to obtain one when you have renewed.

Please also note a slight change in the arrangements this year. As usual, we request renewal payments BEFORE 1st March as this helps the volunteers who manage the process and keep records enormously. Anyone who does not arrange their renewal payment BEFORE 1st April will be charged an additional £10 for late payment after that. Please put your email address onto the renewal form even if you think we already have it so that we can ensure our records are fully up to date.

Finally, thank you to the Committee for all your work during the previous year and to others who have contributed in different ways. I wish you all good tennis and enjoyable games.

Sad news… our Head Coach Alex is moving on. His last session was Mid-July 2024. Alex has inspired many juniors and adults to pick up the tennis racket. His style of coaching techniques has lifted WTC’s coaching programme to a new level and we thank him for all his hard work and commitment to our club.

We are sad to see him go but wish him the very best in his coaching career

Jane Astle, organised a card and collection which has raised over £150. With that she has bought him some presents and a gift card.

Good Luck Alex

You’re always welcome back for a game or two.

Ben’s Acorns Charity Tournament

A quick thank you message from Helen and Phil.

Hello Everyone,

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the tennis players who took part in the tournament and to everyone who supported/donated on the day.

The ‘Acorns’ charity tournament in memory of Ben went amazingly. There were some tight matches and a couple of cheeky drop shot winners. The final between Deborah T and Bob J Vs Lorraine W and Liam H was a good watch and, in the end, the winners of the Championship tiebreak by 10-6 were Lorraine W and Liam H. Congratulations to them both, they were presented with wine and chocolates, and everyone that took part received a certificate to remember the event. The certificates were kindly designed by Sarah Pallett and printed by Larissa at Melvyn Danes and we’re really grateful to them for their effort.

So far, the event has raised £277.65 in cash and when adding the online donations from the Tennis Club Members they have helped us raise a total of £440 towards the cause. That is a massive step to achieving our fund-raising goal! Thank you again for everyone who has supported us.

Our Just Giving Page is still open, so if you can keep sharing so we can reach as many kind people as possible this would be appreciated. Just Giving Page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/phil-evans-1710177738331

We would also like to say a huge thanks to Kevin for all he did to arrange the day.

Lastly, below are some pictures from the day for all to enjoy. Thank you again and see you on the courts.

Kind Regards,

Helen and Phil

80th D-Day Celebration

Thank you to everyone who attended the 80th D-Day Celebration on 9th June 2024 in Wythall Park.

Our historical tennis display attracted alot of interest and it was fun to play with wooden tennis rackets. I now actually understand how difficult it was back then to hit the ball. Thanks goes to Chris E for making this happen.

Moving forward to the more modern tennis rackets. The Rep from Yonex UK brought along lots of rackets to practice with and to talk all things tennis. Thanks goes to Les S for organising this.

Lastly thank you for our wonderful volunteers on the day. The day would not have been a success without you. We appreciate your support and commitment to our club.

Hope to see you on the courts soon.

Thank you, from Kevin

What can I say!!!

Thank you so much for my appreciation evening on April 13th. I cannot believe how long I have been coaching at WTC.

Although I have put time into the club, my family and I have enjoyed endless love and enjoyment over the years.

I was overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone. The bench in memory of Shelley was a piece of genius. With the surplus money, I will purchase a plaque in her memory plus treat myself over the summer. Shelley passed away 6 years in June, her ashes remained at Thomas Brothers Funeral Directors. So it now seemed appropriate for me to bring her home.

From the photo, you can see when I have a read or a cup tea, Shelley joins me. Gypsy the cat soon realised it was a comfortable seat so on occasions the three of us enjoy a few moments in the sun.

So, thank you again to everyone.

Lots of love,

Kevin xxx

Kevin Turner

As you are aware, Kevin is stepping back from his commitments to Wythall Tennis Club (WTC). This comes with great sadness but from what seems like a lifetime of commitment to Wythall means he finally gets to relax and enjoy his well earned retirement.

If I was to list his achievements and everything which he has done for this community, well it will never end. His dedication and hard work has inspired young and old to pick up a tennis racket. He has supported our members and helped the tennis club through tough times. We owe a huge gratitude of appreciation towards Kevin.

Additionally, Kevin has had manly roles within the Wythall Community Association (WCA) and Wythall Community Club (WCC). He has been a part of the Management Team, Firework/FunRun Marshals, an Association Trustee, and more famously the man in the red suit and black boots who drives a sleigh! There are much more accomplishments and roles where Kevin has been in the background ensuring any event has success. His connections and ideas have helped raise awareness and bring our local community together for good causes.

In recognition and in celebration of his achievements we have decided to have a party. All are welcome to join us in the Britannia Room (WCC) on Saturday 13th April 2024 at 7.30PM. So we can gauge numbers, please email larissaehobbs@gmail.com if you and your family would like to attend.

The skittles alley and pool table will be available to use and of course the bar is open so you can share a drink or two with Kevin.

Also we have created a Kevin Turner Appreciation Fund via ‘GoFundMe’ where you can donate. Link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/kevin-turner-appreciation-fund

Thank you.

Newsletter 2024

We hope you will be renewing with us for another year or maybe joining us for the first time. We aim to be a friendly and inclusive club, encouraging people of all ages and levels of experience to have the opportunity to play and enjoy tennis. Whether you are a full member, a junior or someone who can only play occasionally, this is your club. You will be able to find plenty of opportunity to improve your game, keep fit and enjoy the experience.

Price inflation has been a big issue during the last two years, but we have tried to keep our costs down and our membership subscriptions reasonable. The rates agreed at the AGM in November have increased this year by just 3% or 4% depending on category, and some of this reflects a new deal on membership of the Wythall Community Association and Community Club. Our subscription now includes a £12 joint membership of both Association and Club for anyone 18+ so you can enjoy the facilities of Wythall House as well as the Park.

One of the ways we keep costs down is through volunteers taking on maintenance tasks and we are very grateful to Bob Wright and others who manage the suppression of weeds and moss on the courts. If you are able to offer any support in this area or other aspects of maintenance then do let me, Bob or any of the Committee know.

While talking of volunteers, I want to express my gratitude to Kevin Turner for his work supporting the tennis coaching programme on Monday and Wednesday nights for so many years. He will be stepping back from this role in 2024 and we are finding different ways to fill the gap he leaves but I am thankful Kevin is continuing with the Saturday morning Pay & Play session for the time being.

This year we plan to freshen up the Club House as well as maintaining the courts in good order. We will also look at tidying up areas outside of the Club House and there may be a call for volunteers to assist with this at some stage.

Finally, thank you to the Committee for all your work during the year and others who contribute in different ways. I wish you good tennis weather and enjoyable games.

Regards,

Chris Maggs, Chair

Men’s Singles Ladder Results

The men’s singles ladder was created in lockdown for some friendly competition. As the competition was greatly enjoyed, this continued with Scott Falconer organising it.

For 2022 we implemented a new points based format for the ladder league. With all ladder matches starting from 1st March up until 30th September. With 15 members involved, it was up to each individual to arrange their matches and play each other once over 2 sets with a championship tie break if necessary. Points are based on how many games you win within the first two sets in each match. This means, the more you’re willing to play the more points you can possibly accumulate throughout the season. Also this gives everyone the chance to play each other irrelevant of ability.

From the 30th September the top 8 then go through to the knockout stages with random draws at each stage (Quarter and Semi Final). Together we completed an impressive 70 ladder matches!

Hopefully everyone enjoyed this season and we aim to go again in 2023.

2022 Results:

The Final consisted of… Waleed Vs Guillaume. The first set went to Waleed 6.3. The second set Guillaume came back winning 6.1. To decide, a Championship Tie-Break was played resulting in Guillaume winning 10.2

Congratulations to… Guillaume Lesoin the Ladder League Men’s Singles Champion 2022!
