Charity American Tournament 2019

The committee chose The Gaucher Association in support of Grace Turner.

This year’s Charity Tournament was on Sunday 14th April 2019 and was in support of Grace Turner who has been a member of our club since she was 5yrs old. Recently, she was diagnosed with Type 1 Gaucher Disease, which is a rare genetic disorder with no cure. She will have ‘ERT’ enzyme replacement therapy for the rest of her life to control her symptoms.

The tournament had a great turn out, we had a total of 8 pairs which means all 4 of our courts were used. The weather was very cold, coats and hats were needed but the sun did eventually turn up for the finals. Our charity tournament is quite different to other tournaments we have. As it’s for charity every member can get involved to support the charity. We had a mixture of players from juniors/off-peak to full-time members, this also means we had a range of ages too (11-73yrs). The American tournament means each member gets to play more tennis throughout the day and gets to mix with members they may not know/played with before. An American Tournament consists of: £5 entry fee, playing 4 games with your partner, then 4 against, adding up your personal scores as you go along. Afterwards, the top 4 men and ladies play a semi-final and then a final. This all gets played on the same day.

In the final was Larissa and Kevin VS Alex and Harley. The final was very competitive with mother vs son and Head coach vs Club coach. There were some long battles and one or two saucepan shots. Due to time of day, only one set was played, Alex and Harley (Head coach and Son) won 6-2 however this score does not reflect the standard of play.

We raised our highest amount yet of £200. The donations came from the players and other members who wanted to support. A huge thankyou goes to Deborah, Bernadette and Jeanette who made some refreshments for the day. Also, to Sarah from the Gaucher Association who supported us with a fundraising pack.

Overall, the day was brilliant our chairman, Chris Maggs presented the prizes along with Grace who appreciated the support from the club and said she will be back to win some trophies soon, so watch out!!
