Saturday Volunteers

IMG_7338

Our Saturday Community Pay & Play sessions remain popular and for many children it is their first experience of tennis. Without our three amazing volunteers who give up their Saturday mornings these sessions would not be possible.

Since parents don’t have to book but just turn up we never know how many children are attending and how wide their ability will be and our policy is to never turn anyone away.
Consequently our volunteers are always having to amend or modify tennis drills to suit their group on that particular morning.

Since these sessions run on a volunteer basis it allows Wythall Tennis Club to offer tennis to our community at competitive prices. If any children wish to move to structured lessons we run sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights.

If interested contact our website or Kevin Turner on 07948 396618.

Ladies promotion

Wythall ladies ‘A’ team were promoted as champions from division 7 of the Birmingham League.

The team were unbeaten throughout the season winning 6 matches and drawing 2. Their closest rivals were West Warwicks who they drew 2-2 away. To clinch the championship Wythall knew they must defeat Blossomfield in the final match of the season. Despite tense opening sets our ladies kept control and eventually won 4-0.

The successful squad were Helen Hill, Jude Savage, Grace Turner, Nancy Berry, Pam Thomas and Larissa Hobbs-Jones.

Men’s promotion

Wythall’s men secured a second successive promotion by finishing runners up in division 6. Throughout the season Wythall remained unbeaten winning 5 and drawing 2 matches. The champions were West Warwicks, losing only one match all season which was against Wythall. To gain promotion the guys had to defeat Streetly away in the final match, any other result would see their opponents promoted. Fortunately Wythall won 3-1.

The successful squad were Rob Turner, Paul Savage, Luke Maggs, Scott Lewis, Tom Bick and Phil Todd.

Congratulations to both teams!

Wythall Tennis Club awarded Beacon status

On Monday 16th July the club was presented the award by Herefordshire and Worcestershire LTA President, Ian King.

This award shows that the club is open to the local community for anyone and making it as easy as possible for anyone to play tennis at the club by providing sessions and equipment to give the game a go.  Kevin Turner and the Wythall committee have done an excellent job creating a community environment at the club providing tennis for anyone locally who is interested.
Although the weather on Monday wasn’t the best, the club committee and club members still turned out and Ian King was full of praise for the club.   In 2000, Ian was at the club to open their new club house so it was great for him to come back to the club to present them with this prestigious award to see how far the club has come in recent years.

End of year Winter League Cup win

Wythall’s  ‘A’ team pair of captain Matt Smith partnered by his younger brother Jake recently won the Stratford & District Winter League end of season cup.

Matt and Jake came joint top of their group before beating Stratford 6-2 in the final, defeating several division 1 pairs on their way. The guys, who both came through the club’s junior ranks, were also key members of the team that won promotion from Division 3 in the Stratford League this season.

A tremendous achievement for the team and all involved!
